Puckmania Weekly Watch: Rivalry Week

Wild on Sports

Puckmania Weekly Watch: Rivalry Week Edition
By WildOnSports NHL Insider Erin Gilman

So as I predicted last week was a great week for hockey, some great and intense games. Touching a bit on last week, the Bruins and Buffalo game was back and forth from puck drop. We are beginning to see some great things from the Bruins players, and some surprising things as well. Nathan Horton has come back from his injury with a vengeance. A lot of players who experience a concussion come back with a lot of fear and some reservations, not number 18. He is already leading the Bruins with 3 goals and 3 assists. Dougie Hamilton is already making his way up the points chart too, with 4 assists already this season.

Calgary got their first win of this season as they welcomed the Edmonton Oilers, an intense game with one of hockey’s biggest rivalries and some of hockey’s most passionate fans.  Chicago Blackhawks remain undefeated with their win against the Detroit Red Wings, though Detroit made them work for it, and work very hard. A few notable injuries this week as well, Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton will be out 7-10 days with a concussion incurred during a fight with Buffalo forward John Scott late in the first period of Thursday’s game. Patricfk Kaleta of the Buffalo Sabres will be out until further notice due to a head injury sustained in Thursday’s game against the Bruins.  Winnipeg’s Dustin Byfuglien will also be game time decision due to aggravating an existing injury during morning skate.

Next week is once again looking to be an exciting week for us hockey fans, with some great match ups scheduled.  My picks are:

Key Match ups
Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs:
No matter how much we here about the Kessel trade it is still just as exciting every time we see him and the Bruins meet up again, which is why Phill Kessel will be my player to watch this game. He has not made it a secret of his distaste for what went down in Boston and he always seems to play his best when he sees the Bruins. We will also probably see a great game from Dougie Hamilton as this Kessel trade after all is what brought him to the Bruins.

Pittsburg Penguins and Washington Capitals.
This game is going to be exciting for the simple reason it has now become known as the battle of what could be the two greatest NHL players of all time. Sidney Crosbey and Alex Ovechkin. These players always play there bests when they meet each other. Maybe it’s because they want to make their mark as the best of the best, or maybe they feel they have something to prove to the other. Either way makes for a great game and also marks these two as my players to watch during this game on Sunday February 3rd, and again on Thursday February 7th.

Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadians
As far as rivalries go, this is by far in my top 5. This game is my personal favorite for this week as there is never a dull moment when these two teams play. It’s even great when they put the fists down long enough to actually play the game. My players to watch for this game are the goaltenders. Tukka Rask has something to prove to this team and I for see one of his greatest games, It’s one thing to let down your team, but if you’re a Boston Bruin and you’re playing the Canadiens it’s disappointing the fans that will really matter. The fans make or break your time in Boston of that there is no question. Carey Price has not had the greatest start this season, however always plays well when he plays the Bruins. I expect this game to be high scoring, but very back and forth.

Los Angelas Kings and the Anaheim Ducks
One of hockey’s best rivalries, The L.A. Kings have been home to some of Hockey’s greatest players from Marcel Dionne to Wayne Gretzky, and as such this team has always been the pride of California. Until of course the Anaheim Ducks came to town and have since given the Kings a run for their money. My players to watch this game are the team captains. Ryan Getzlaf and Dustin Brown.

Hoopshysteria: Something in the Water in Memphis?

Wild on Sports

Hoopshysteria Weekly Column
Something in the Water in Memphis?
By Wild on Sports Basketball Analyst Talyon Perry
  February 1, 2013

Another week goes by and trades are flying as we get closer to the trade deadline. There must be something going on in Memphis because they have made two trades in the last week and a half. First they sent Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Shelby and a first round pick to Cleveland for Jon Leuer, slicing $6 million off the Grizzlies Salary Cap. A deal like that should allow them to keep their other star players right?

Wrong. The Grizzlies made more headlines Wednesday, completing a three team trade with Toronto and Detroit that will ship Rudy Gay and Hamed Haddadi to Toranto. Toronto will send Ed Davis to Memphis and Jose Calderon to Detroit, while Detroit will complete the trade by shipping Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince to Memphis. This is a great trade for the Toronto Raptors because they get one of the best under-rated small forwards in the game, while also giving Kyle Lowry the minutes he deserves. As for Memphis, they really should have thought this trade through. They lose a great small forward in exchange for a good, young big man, but Memphis will have to split minutes with starters Gasol and Randolph for him to have any production. Detroit comes out of this deal with a great point guard that will get the their low post players a lot of good looks.

Shifting gears to the action on the court; another big surprise this week has been the unselfishness of Kobe Bryant. Yes, I know he averages 5.3 assists per game but it is still a sweet surprise. Bryant has 10+ assists in three of his last four games (coming up one short against Phoenix). Speaking of the Lakers, Steve Nash made his first return to Phoenix but lost 86-92.

Up in Boston, I will use the cliche "when it rains, it pours." The Celtics are still sub .500 and Rajon Rondo's torn ACL isnt going to help. Maybe Ray Lewis can give Rondo some deer antler spray to help him recover faster. The Celtics are 2-0 without Rondo so far, but when they start losing remember: at least you aren't the Bobcats.

Great action coming your way this weekend starting with Rudy Gay's first game as a Raptor against the LA Clippers. With CP3 out, watch the matchup between two young guards: Kyle Lowry and Eric Bledsoe. Saturday will treat us to a 3pt contest between the Milwaukee Bucks and the New York Knicks. Whoever has the highest 3pt percentage will win this game. New York have been almost unstoppable from behind the line getting lots of production out of Anthony and Smith. Sunday's action will unfortunately disappoint many fans as the best matchup is the Clippers against the limping Celtics, but a good low post battle between Griffin and Garnett could be in store. I'm sure we can all overlook one bad day of basketball especially when its Superbowl Sunday.

NBA Fanduel Friday Players to Start - February 1st Edition
NBA Fanduel season is underway and Wild on Sports once again is helping you pick the best players to start this week to help you win your league. Take a few players, take all the players, take none of the players, but if last week is a sign of things to come this list is one to look at each week before setting your line-ups!
Click here to see last week's results: January 25th NBA Fanduel Picks

PG - Jameer Nelson  vs.  Boston Celtics  $7,400
Nelson has been a very consistent play over his last 10 games averaging 29.3 fantasy points per game including games in the 30's in 3 of his last 4. The Celtics are reeling and are without the services of star PG Rajon Rondo for the remainder of the season making this an intriguing match-up this week.
PG - Darren Collison  vs. Phoenix Suns  $5,600
Good value play here with Collison who is averaging 21.7 fantasy points per game but is coming off a 34 point performance Tuesday night against Portland.
SG - J.J. Reddick  vs.  Boston Celtics  $5,600
Reddick is one of those guys who just eats up the Celtics dating back to a playoff round a few years ago where is stole the show for the Magic out-performing even Dwight Howard in a few games. After a slow start to the season Reddick is back in the starting line-up for Orlando and coming off a couple monster games. One possible red-flag is if he draws a defensive match-up with Avery Bradley, the Celtics lone lock-down defender this season. Risk here is worth the reward.
SG - Joe Johnson  vs.  Chicago Bulls  $6,000
Johnson is back to full strength after being slowed by a bout with the flu last week that really hurt his numbers. He is another one of those guys who is consistent enough to plug in and expect 20+ a night.
SF - Lebron James  vs.  Indiana Pacers  $9,900
The debate every week is who to choose from as your stud pick between James and Durant. The pick is easy this week as Oklahoma City has the night off. Expect another 40+ night from Lebron.
SF - Matt Barnes  vs.  Toronto Raptors $5,100
Barnes has been trending down lately but may have gotten the little motivational spark needed as he was ejected after sparking a little pushing and shoving against Minnesota Wednesday night.
PF - David West  vs. Miami Heat  $7,600
West is another guy who is as steady as they come. He is going to be looked upon to step up big time if Indiana wants to keep pace with the high scoring Heat. Expect mid-20's with potential for 30+ as he has gone as high as 40 in a pair of games in the past two weeks.
PF - Ryan Anderson  vs.  Denver Nuggets  $6,000
Anderson has been a 3-point machine for the Hornets lately keeping his scoring in the 20's in each of his last 7 games. Denver is giving up over 100 points per game so expect Anderson and New Orleans to come out firing in this one.
C - Chris Bosh  vs.  Indiana Pacers  $6,800
Really undervalued for a guy averaging 28.4 points per game. Indiana has a tough team defensive scheme but with Lebron and Wade likely to draw most of the attention Bosh should be open for easy buckets down low.

Good luck this week everyone! Be sure to check back with us on Monday for a recap of how we did.

Tiger Back on the Prowl?

Wild on Sports

Tiger Back on the Prowl?
After a rough start to his year in Abu Dhabi two weeks ago, Tiger Woods bounced back in grand fashion to claim his 75th PGA Tour title winning the Farmer's Insurance Open on Monday. The win marks the 8th time Tiger has won at Torry Pines.

He won like he did in the old days. Get the lead early, crush the par 5's and cruise to victory.

"I drove the ball beautifully all week," said Woods. "My short game has been coming around. It came around at the end of last season, and you're not going to hit every par 5 in two, but you need to get up and down, and I did that this week. I feel comfortable here."

For Woods the four stroke victory is his fourth win in past 18 tournaments dating back to his win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational a year ago.

"My short game was back to how I know it can be. My shots that I hit, especially out of these nasty little lies, I hit some really good ones this week. And that allowed me to save some pars, save some birdies and move my way up the board, and basically that's what I did."

So Woods thinks the Tiger of old is back. But is it a case of Tiger going to a course that might be his biggest comfort-zone in golf in Torry Pines, or is this the turning point for a player who has not won a major since the 2008 U.S Open at the same Torry Pines course?

The real answer will come in April at the Masters where Tiger has not taken home the Green Jacket in eight years.

What do you think? Is Tiger back or is this just a flash from the past?

As we approach the half way point in the 2012-13 NBA season the power shift appears to be favoring the Western Conference where the elite teams are establishing themselves and pulling away from the pack. On the Eastern Conference side things are a little more condensed as just 8 games separate 1st place Miami from 8th place Boston who defeated the Heat over the weekend. It is going to be a wild ride down the stretch. Be sure to check back each week as we take a glace at where each team stands heading towards the playoffs.

Just two undefeated teams remain in the NHL and top our power rankings this week. The two biggest surprises thus far have to be the Anaheim Ducks and LA Kings, and for opposite reasons. At 3-1-0 the Ducks sit in second place in the Pacific Division. Conversely, the defending Stanley Cup champions sit second to last in that same Pacific. It is very early still, but with just a 48 game season every point is extremely important.
