Bruins Make Post Deadline Splash

The NHL Trade Deadline has past but one Stanley Cup contender may have just made one of the season's largest impact additions. The Boston Bruins on Tuesday signed 27-year-old winger Carl Soderberg, leading scoring in the Sweedish Elite League, to a three year deal.

For those of you not in Boston or Sweeden, I'm sure you are probably sitting there scratching you head saying "WHO?" Well, Soderberg is a 6-3, 207lb power forward who just tore up one of the better European leagues to the tune of 31 goals and 29 assists in 54 games. He was a second round draft pick of the St. Louis Blues back in 2004 but had his rights traded to the Bruins in 2007 in a deal that saw Hannu Toivonen shipped off to St. Louis. He has never played a professional game in North America, but over the past eight seasons of professional hockey in Sweeden has averaged well over a point per game.

Still not getting you excited? EliteProspects.com had the following to say about him...
"A rather complete and well-rounded player. Söderberg is a very talented and highly skilled center with good two-way ability. He has excellent hockey sense, decent nose for the net and fine playmaking ability. Release is good and so are his technical skills and creativity. Not the fastest of skaters, but feet are still pretty good. Controls the puck very comfortably with his reach. Valuable in short-handed situations."
 From HockeysFuture.com:
"Söderberg is a very explosive player. He is a good skater and has a powerful stride. With his quick feet he very easily gets around the opponents. He has an accurate shot, has a fine scoring touch and is a good playmaker as well. His hockey sense is top-notch and the way he handles the puck in full flight is very impressive. A strong player with great size combined with good technical skills. Earlier his defense was somewhat questionable but he has become a much better player without the puck."

Excited yet? Well if that doesn't do it for you how about this, the NHL player who's game scouts compare most closely to... Jaromir Jagr; the same Jagr just acquired by the Bruins at the deadline that has put up a point per game since his arrival. Now that's a heck of a comparison and one that will be hard to live up to, but if the Bruins can get 41-year old Jagr like production from a player that they do not have to give up a 2nd round pick for, that is a huge win for a team who has been fairly injury ridden in recent weeks.
