Matty McRants' Weekly Take: Is the WBC BS?

Matty McRants' Weekly Sports Take
March 6th, 2013
A weekly forum for our own "Angry Irishman" to blow off some steam and go on one of his classic sports rants. Sometimes funny, sometimes crazy, sometimes all over the place but always opinionated.
Lets take a look at what is grinding his gears this week...
I want to like the World Baseball Classic. I really do. I mean, look, here's this awesome thing right in the middle of boring spring training. What's not to like?

Oh, wait. The best American players aren't playing.

Is this honestly the best lineup that the USA could get together? Shane Victorino is a fine player, sure, but wouldn't you rather see Bryce Harper or Mike Trout wearing the Red, White, and Blue?  I understand that teams want to protect their players. The top pitchers aren't ready to go out there and toss 5+ innings with complete command and velocity. And yes, I see that last years NL Cy Young was leading the pitching staff. But in a more perfect scenario, wouldn't you rather see the likes of Greinke, Kershaw, Verlander, and Price?

With no baseball in the Olympics, this is the States' chance to show off to the world that this whole baseball thing is our game. If the NHL and NBA can send their prized players to play in international competition, what makes baseball any different?

What would my starting lineup look like? (pretending injuries aren't a factor)

SP: Justin Verlander
C: Buster Posey
1B: Mark Teixeria
2B: Dustin Pedroia
3B: David Wright
SS: Troy Tulowitzki
OF: Bryce Harper
OF: Mike Trout
OF:  Jason Heyward

Agree? Disagree? Let us know.
