Atlanta Signs Umenyiora

Wild on Sports
Atlanta Signs Umenyiora

After releasing the team's all-time leading sack leader, the Atlanta Falcons were in need of a strong pass rushing presence. They found that guy on Thursday in the form of ex-Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora.

Umenyiora is a two time Super Bowl Champion from his time in New York and while has been hampered with injuries the past few seasons is one of the games truely elite sack specialist when 100%. Over his career Osi has 75 sacks, 31 forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries.

Despite being around for what seems like a much longer time period, Umenyiora is just 31 years old, several years younger than John Abraham, the man he is replacing.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Umenyiora's deal is for $8.5 million, with a max value of $12 million, including $5 million guaranteed.

It will be interesting to see which version of Umenyiora shows up in Atlanta. If it is the same man that set an NFL record with 10 forced fumbles in 2010, the Falcons will have gotten themselves a steal. If it is the 2012 version that saw him start just four games in an injury plagued season, they might be in a bit of trouble.
