Tom Brady: A Patriot For Life

Tom Brady: A Patriot For Life

Beyond the hoodie, Spygate and multiple Super Bowl Championships lies one key tie often overlooked in New England: TEAM. No player is too big. No one player is more special than the next. You are only as valuable as what piece you bring to the puzzle that is the New England Patriots. Perhaps no player embodies that notion more so than Tom Brady. For the second time in his 13 year NFL career, Brady has agreed to an extension with the team far below market rate for one reason and one reason only: Team.

The deal, a 3-year $27million extension keeps Brady in a Patriots uniform thru the 2017 season, at which point he will be 40 years old  - all but assuring he will retire in the only uniform he has known his entire career.

So why would a perennial Pro Bowler, 3-time Super Bowl Champion and consensus first ballot hall-of-famer take significantly less, yet again, when 20 other teams in the NFL would have handed him a blank check when his current contract expires? The answer is simple: he has bought in to everything Bill Belichick is selling - drinking the coolaid - preaching the Patriot way.

It is a rare thing in today's game to see a player start and finish his career with the same team. Jerry Rice went to Oakland. Brett Favre bounced around with New York and Minnesota. Even Brady's idol Joe Montana finished his career in Kansas City. Brady is a different bred. He bleeds the Patriot blue.

There are people out there that don't like his "pretty boy" image or the fact that he is married to a supermodel. But the bottom line is Tom Brady is a heck of a football player and his loyalty and commitment to team make him a role model to million; a true team player - a player you want as the icon of your franchise; for life.
