So Long Alex

Wild on Sports
So Long Alex

Its unofficially official. Alex Smith is about to no longer a member of the San Francisco 49ers, or something like that?  According to multiple reports the 49ers have a deal in place with an undisclosed team to ship their 1B quarterback to another team. The only sticking point is that any deal can not be announced until March 12th, the official start to the 2013 NFL calender year.

Smith, a former #1 overall pick in 2015 and 6 1/2 year starter in San Francisco, led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game in 2011 and appeared to be on that path again this season until a concussion opened the door for rookie QB Colin Kaepernick to steal the starting job keeping Smith on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals are believed to be the teams with the most interest. Although, it is less likely that Smith would be moved to a inner-division foe. Kansas City seems to make the most sense. Chiefs new coach Andy Reid likes mobile, accurate quarterbacks. Smith fits the bill to a tee. The Chiefs have the #1 overall pick in April's draft. With no clear cut franchise QB in this year's draft class, they are likely to fill another need with the pick while looking outside the organization for the solution at QB.

Smith is currently under contract through the 2014 NFL season. In 2013, he is scheduled to make $7.5 million with a $1milion roster bonus if he is still on the team when the league calender year begins.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh all but confirmed that Smith would be moved this off-season, "I think the main thing is Alex is a heck of a football player," Harbaugh said this week at the NFL combine. "Alex is really playing the best football of his career the last two years. And we think we have the best quarterback situation in the National Football League. Feel strongly about that. Again, that'll be a process that plays out. Alex Smith, continuing to be a 49ers or if a trade occurs in the next weeks or months. Those are the two possibilities -- most-likely possibilities."

Most likely indeed, that Smith will have a new home in a few weeks.
