Blue Jays Pick Gibson...Again

Stop me if you have heard this before:  the Toronto Blue Jays have named John Gibbons as their next manager.

Yup, thought so.

That same John Gibbons who managed the club from 2004-08 is back at the helm. The move goes against the current trend in Major League Baseball of going with guys who are first time managers. The next wave of Mike Matheny's and Robin Ventura's were out there (see Brad Ausmus, Dave Martinez, Mike Maddux) but the Jays opted for familarity making Gibbons their man.

"I don't know that there was anybody better in terms of managing a bullpen, connecting with the players, connecting with the front office, holding players accountable," said Totonto GM Alex Anthopoulos at Tuesday's press conference. "Really everything you want in a manager. From my standpoint, I don't have any stronger belief that this is the right guy to lead this team."

Despite headline raising spats with previous players (Shea Hillenbrand, Ted Lilly to name a few), Gibbons is considered by all accounts to be a players manager. That may be just what the doctor ordered to manage the veteran players (and egos) that the Jays have brought in this off-season. Just yesterday the mega-deal of the off-season was finalized with the Jays set to acquire all-stars Josh Johnson, Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle from the Miami Marlins in a twelve player deal.

Gibbons seems to the be cherry on top to the Jays off-season.
